Warren Students and Community Raise Funds for Playground

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

Students in grades K-6 at the Warren School recently participated in a Jog-a-Thon to raise funds for their new playground. The event, sponsored by parents, was coordinated with the P.E. program, and also supported the school’s ongoing commitment to wellness. They raised approximately $3,100.00. We are so very thankful for all the efforts thus far; whether people have given directly to the school or Just toss their spare change into the canister at the General Store, every penny is appreciated!

This week, the student council is having a used book sale which will also benefit the playground fund. The town crew has been very generous in their offer to prepare the grounds for installation, and will be hard at work in the upcoming weeks to be ready for June 26.

We still need more funds. We’ve raised approximately $28,000.00 and need to get to $36,000.00 as soon as possible. Any patrons willing to move the project along are welcome to call the Warren School at 868-2223. Thanks for all your support.

Building Committee Update

Saturday, June 3rd, 2006

The Building Committee reviewed draft drawings for the proposed town office building to be constructed on town-owned property off Cemetery Road at its meeting on May 26. The proposed building would have one level with a full basement for future use and a possible loft for some storage.

The committee has been working with the architectural firm of Ames and Whitaker of Waterbury on a floor plan design that will provide for the office needs of the town now and for some time into the future. The floor plan includes space for land use offices, town clerk and tax collector, selectmen, registrars and information technology. It includes space for eventual social services and future state trooper. There is a large meeting room for approximately 50 people which will be used for small scale meetings such as planning and zoning meetings. All town meetings and voting would continue to take place at the old town hall which will become a community center.

The dimensions of the building have been staked out at the site and the wetlands have been flagged. An engineer will be visiting the site shortly to determine what will be needed for a septic system and well.

When the engineering and architectural drawings are complete, a cost projection will be done and then the project will be ready to present to a town meeting for voter consideration. No date has been set for the town meeting.

Warren Historical Society Membership Drive

Saturday, June 3rd, 2006

The Warren Historical Society, Inc. held an open house at the Academy on Sunday, May 28. Visitors heading to or returning from the Memorial Day Parade stopped by the Academy to see old pictures of Warren and a collection of historical documents and artifacts.

Warren had an historical society for many years, but it lost membership sometime in the 1990s. The new historical society has incorporated and is in the process of seeking tax exempt status for its donors. As part of the process for reestablishing an historical society for Warren, a membership campaign is now underway. Membership costs $10 per family and entitles participation in an annual meeting to be scheduled for October. Members will then elect the board of the society and its officers and be involved in selecting projects and focus for the society.

People who attended the Open House offered many useful ideas and suggestions for projects for the society. Some were interested in seeing markers designating important historical places in town, such as the Brick School. Others were interested in preserving and increasing the town’s store of historical documents. And some people were interested in programs about the history Warren.

The incorporating members of the society are anxious to involve more people in the society. Membership forms will be available at the Library, the town hall, and on line on the Historical Society page under Town Information.
