Building Committee Notes for Nov 30 Meeting

Sunday, December 5th, 2004

The Building Committee held a meeting at Town Hall on November 30 to discuss input on the architect’s proposal for the town hall.  Several alternatives were presented by Teresa Layman and are now on file at the town hall and available to the public for review.

The committee discussed a number of ideas and activities that are needed to move toward a decision on how to proceed.

The architect who did the study will be asked to meet again with the committee to explain why he did not present two options as required in the request for proposal.  He will be asked to present a second option at a town meeting.

Efforts will be made by committee members to seek out opinions and ideas from townspeople.  Anyone with access to this website who registers as a user, can post questions and ideas directly to this site. Townspeople may contact committee members, Jack Travers, First Selectman, or may write their thoughts to the committee care of the selectmen’s office.

Most frequent comments heard from the public are the need to move forward expeditiously, the need to provide for recreation space in whatever plan is adopted and the need to offer options to the public for consideration, not just one plan.

Proposals now on file with the committee range from renovating the exisiting town hall to create offices where the gym is now and to bring the building up to code at an estimated costs of $2.4 million to building a separate office building to replace the Academy and renovating the town hall as a community center at an estimated cost of $4.050,000.  Other ideas include adding a wing to the town hall or building a separate recreation building.

The Building Committee meets again on December 8 at 7 pm to continue their deliberations.  No plans will be adopted until they are presented to the town at a town meeting and subject to vote.
